I'm going to spend this season laying out my passion for helping people feel empowered by their Medical and Personal Health choices.  I became a Board Certified Nurse Coach last year and I have to admit, it's a little confusing understanding exactly what a Nurse can offer you outside the traditional medical model.  I'm excited to bring some clarity on the profession of Nurse Coaching by diving into the profession of Life Coaching a little bit. 

This season is going to get straight to the point and deliver you an entertaining perspective on what's really happening inside our complex medical machine.  And even though I might touch on some Heavy topics such as dying, I'll always STRIVE to help you THIRVE!  So give me around 10-15 minutes every week to bring some JOY into YOUR LIFE...

Ode to coaching/ What the Heck is a Nurse Coach, A Charge Nurse with a Whistle?

What is nurse coaching, better yet, What is coaching?  Like most of my life, I didn't understand exactly what I was trying to accomplish until after I had already paid and completed the necessary training to become this thing I was trying to be.  Like with nurse coaching, I didn't realize I was actually becoming a specialized life coach that Hass to be a nurse that goes through specific training that allows the opportunity to pass a test to become a board certified nurse coach.  

Reminds me of when I became a nurse and I got done with Athens technical College and got my nursing diploma/degree or whatever it was and then they sent me my transcript, with all the hours I had completed and how that made me capable of taking the N-clex to become a Registered Nurse.  I got done and I was like ohhh that’s how college works.  And Now that I am moving forward with nurse coaching and it seems like my own mother doesn't even seem to know what I'm trying to accomplish, I figured what better time to use my platform to shine some light on the subject of coaching and how it can improve your life. 

So I'm gonna start with the most familiar kind of coaching, especially in  my neck of the woods and that sports coaching. And the best example that comes to mind for me, is Kirby Smart. He took a really good program from a really good coach in Mark Right and made it elite by elevating the level of coaching.  Ever since I enrolled at the University of Georgia in 2002;talent for our football team never seemed to be the issue but we were always missing something and that something was a national championship. I was born in 1984 and I give my boys a hard time because they have the same number of national championships for the team we root for and I’m 30+ years their elder.  That only happened because of high quality coaching. And ironically enough coaches, like Kirby, Smart and Nick Saban, used a mindset coach named Trevor Moawad to elevate their own coaching.  So essentially, coaching takes something that is already good or loaded with potential, and finds creative ways to motivate/ mold it to be even Better!  

Now let's dive in to the profession of life coaching. Life coaching is definitely getting more and more popular but there's still a lot of confusion around the subject. And quite honestly it's because it is confusing. Scroll on Facebook you could probably find a one hour Life coaching course that will give you a certificate so you can tell the world that you're a life coach. And then there's some really good programs that take hundreds of hours of training before you can claim that you're a life coach. So then you enter a world that has both swindlers and thieves on one hand and gurus and saints on the other, all with the same job title. This is why I believe so many people are hesitant to find out more about life coaching!  But there is a solution and it's already here my friends!

So back to my original question what is nurse coaching?  Well, the best definition I've heard so far that clearly defines what nurse coaching is; is that nursing is the only licensed professional that can earn a board certification in the profession of coaching.  There's no board certification in coaching for therapist, doctors, accountants, lawyers, or any other profession that can obtain a license in their career.  I'm not saying that there aren't great life coaches out there that aren’t Nurses but when you hire a board certified nurse coach, you're hiring somebody that is competent enough to become a registered nurse.  And then You can't become a nurse coach without being a nurse at least two years; and then completing at least 120 hours of training in the art of Nurse coaching.  And then pass a Board Exam to become a Board Certified Nurse Coach.

I believe that this level of training should give the consumer confidence that they're actually getting what they're paying for if they are looking for quality coaching!  Most nurse coaches specialize in something that corresponds with their clinical experience but even if you're just curious about trying a life coach then a nurse coach is a great place to start.

Alright and we’re Back!  I want to thank everyone who listens to the show and appreciates the insights that I bring. I believe we're leaving a lot on the table by not having serious discussions about our current health and well-being.  The current state of nursing homes and end of life care is beyond depressing and is potentially a glimpse of Hell that the Revelationist spoke of 2000 years ago.  I don’t know for sure but seems likely with a bunch of Lost people existing in a strange land void of any quality.  I am really passionate about the fact that We feed the aging population pill after pill, and never stop to ask when is enough enough.  

Moving forward I’m GOING to use my expertise from over 15 years of being a nurse in basically every department in the hospital and bring it directly to you.  This is why I'm going to spend the season back up on my soapbox covering a variety of topics to help show the world exactly how nurse coaching can improve Quality in so many different areas of your life. The next four episodes will detail each of my grandparents endings. With two of my grandparents, I helped facilitate what I call Enlightened Endings in which I guided their children, i.e. my parents and aunts and uncle's with my nursing knowledge to a more peaceful Endings surrounded by family and loved ones at the time of their passing.  I wanted to go with the term, happy endings, but I was told that one was already taken so Enlightened Endings it is.  And on the other hand, with my other two grandparents, I felt a little more powerless as they wasted away in a land I called Pillgatory, going alone in the dark of the night after not being sure of where they were for years.  So join me next time when I tell the story of my Papa, in tougher than nails.
